Anyone suffering from a panic attack or an acute episode of extreme anxiety feels like they desperately need help. During the acute episode, it seems as if there’s little anyone can do because there’s no obvious cause for the overwhelming terror.
Many times, someone suffering from a panic attack will wind up in an emergency room because of the concern that the might possibly be a disastrous medical problem going on and also because they are completely out of control.
Sometimes physicians will prescribe sedatives for the short-term, but that’s clearly not a long-term solution. Effective panic attack help requires a different approach.
You can think of panic attack help as being broken into two categories. One addresses the short-term symptoms while the other attempts to affect a long-term cure.
Giving sedatives to help the person calm down during an acute attack is an example of the short-term approach. Other medications used to treat panic attacks fall in the short to mid term category. In addition to sedatives, various forms of antidepressants and beta blocking drugs are used to control panic attacks and minimize their symptoms.
The longer-term methods involve learning some skill sets, practicing exercises and using various psychological techniques.
For example, it’s very helpful for someone with anxiety to learn diaphragmatic breathing and practice it frequently. Relaxing physical activities such as yoga, stretching, tai chi or getting a massage help lower the overall stress levels.
Operant conditioning psychological approaches were used in the past, but less so now because cognitive behavioral therapy seems to be even more effective and more comfortable for the person undergoing treatment.
